Why People See a Chiropractor During Pregnancy In Birmignham & Warwickshire.

Pregnancy can be one of the most joyful and exciting times of a persons life. Unfortunately, it can also be a time of extreme stress and challenge, especially when things don’t quite go to plan. Naturally, your body will undergo some hugely significant changes, placing stress upon you both physically and emotionally throughout pregnancy, birth and potentially beyond.

Musculoskeletal pain in the pelvic area is common during pregnancy and is commonly known as Pregnancy-Related Pelvic Girdle Pain (PGP). The term PGP encompasses a number of pain presentations around the low back and pelvis, including, but not exclusive to:

A recent review of current research suggests that during pregnancy, pregnancy related pelvic girdle pain and pregnancy related low back pain have a prevalence as high as 89.9%.

Factors that are positively associated with pregnancy related pelvic girdle pain and pregnancy related low back pain include a history of low back or pelvic girdle pain, being overweight/obese, stress, depression and anxiety, already having a child, younger age, no pre-pregnancy exercise, physically demanding work, previous back trauma/disease, and progestin-intrauterine device use.

Another complaint that patients present to Chiropractors is Round Ligament Pain. This is a sharp pain or jabbing feeling often felt in the lower belly or groin area on one or both sides. It is one of the most common complaints during pregnancy and is most often felt during the second trimester.

Neck Pain during pregnancy is not uncommon either, and this may again be related to physical and postural changes, and physiologic changes.

Why People See a Chiropractor Following Pregnancy & Birth In Birmingham & Warwickshire.

Your body has been through a lot. Birth can be straight forward, or it can be complicated. Either way, new Mums are seldom given much time to recover, having to immediately tend to their new born, and potentially elder siblings of their newborn. Breastfeeding, bobbing your baby to sleep, and carrying around heavy pushchairs, carriers and baby bags can all take its toll on your musculoskeletal system, leading to pain and disability.

Post-partum Pelvic Girdle Pain (Pgrp) Has a Prevelence of Up to 43% in the First 3-years Following Childbirth, & 7 % Up to 6-years Following Childbirth.

Birth can be considered a major trauma to the body, and yet most of us don’t treat it that way. If you had any type of surgery, or you were recovering following an accident, chances are that part of your recovery would include some form of rehabilitation. At our Birmingham Chiropractic Clinic, and our Warwickshire Chiropractic Clinic, we see this to be an essential component of recovery following pregnancy and birth, and one of the best ways to ensure that you recovery as close to your pre-pregnancy level of fitness as quickly and completely as possible.
