WHAT IS GAIT ANALYSIS?

by | Feb 28, 2021

Gait analysis is when a trained specialist assesses the way that your body moves when walking. The human gait involves balance and coordination of muscles in a way that enables the body to propel forward in a rhythmic repetitive fashion. Gait analysis studies this human motion using a variety of measuring tools, technology and experience. The aim is to ascertain if the movement is energy efficient and smooth and enables transfer of weight from one foot to another without overloading or stressing the lower limb, including the hip and lower back.

Gait analysis is a non-invasive way of determining if your locomotion is efficient. If video-analysis is used as part of this assessment it will enable a more intricate evaluation and comparison of the legs. Including assessment of the different phases of gait and the timing of these in relation to muscle activation. As the human gait is repetitive and often results in thousands of steps on a daily basis, the smallest of changes, asymmetries and compensations can result in significant injuries and pain.
