What is Physiotherapy?

According to the The Chartered Society of Physiotherapy’s (CSP), and National Health Service (NHS) definition:

Physiotherapy helps to restore movement and function when someone is affected by injury, illness or disability. It can also help to reduce your risk of injury or illness in the future.

Physiotherapy can be helpful for people of all ages with a wide range of health conditions, including problems affecting bones, joints and soft tissue – such as back pain, neck pain, shoulder pain and sports injuries.

Physiotherapy can improve your physical activity while helping you to prevent further injuries.

Physiotherapy Consultation.

Your First Physiotherapy Appointment.

Our physiotherapists begin by taking a thorough clinical history of your complaint, including a complete past medical history, family history and any other factors affecting your condition.

This is followed by a comprehensive physical examination by a physiotherapist, which includes orthopaedic, neurological, postural and gait evaluations. This thorough approach helps our physiotherapists identify contributing factors to your complaint.

Most patients we see are suitable for physiotherapy. However, if further testing like blood tests or investigative imaging such as an MRI, CT scan, ultrasound or X-ray is needed, we refer you swiftly and efficiently to a specialist.

Most patients are eligible for physiotherapy. If additional examinations like blood tests or diagnostic imaging are necessary, we promptly refer you to a suitable specialist.

You might not currently have a complaint but are looking to prevent future problems, stay fit and well or optimise your sporting performance. In this case, we consider the future and identify potential risk factors, especially if you have a family member with a similar complaint or are involved in a sport where such problems are common.

Confidential Clinical Report of Findings.

Your Second Physiotherapy Appointment.

Following your consultation and diagnostic service appointment, your physiotherapist will assess your findings and create a personalised treatment or management plan for your condition.  From there we’ll be able to discuss our conclusions with you in detail. During this session our physiotherapists will inform you about:

A Diagnosis of your condition: What it is, & what’s causing it.

A Prognosis of your case: How it’s expected to recover and how long that will take.

An Outline of Proposed Treatment: Should we deem ourselves suitable for the management of your complaint, we will inform you of:

  • What we can do to help you.
  • What you will be able to do, in order to help yourself.
  • What outcomes you can expect.
  • The rate at which you can expect results.
  • What this result will cost you in time and money. ‘We aim to make all costs involved in the management of your case known to you from the outset.’ Click here to see ‘Our Costs’.
  • If we feel that your complaint would be better managed by another clinician, the appropriate referral to that clinician will be made without delay.

Our Modern & Evidence-based Approach to Physiotherapy.

Our acclaimed outcomes and clinical achievements stem from a comprehensive and evidence-based strategy.

Pain is a global epidemic, affecting one in every five adults (20%) and an additional one in ten (10%) annually with chronic pain.  It impacts individuals across all demographics, regardless of age, gender, income, ethnicity or location.  Pain experiences range from acute to chronic or intermittent, or a combination.

Acute pain, often sudden and temporary, is common across all ages and backgrounds. It usually results from tissue injury, surgery or medical procedures. While it’s a vital physiological response signalling potential harm, managing it prevents unnecessary suffering and promotes recovery.

Chronic pain, in contrast, is a persistent and debilitating challenge. Unlike acute pain, which resolves with healing, chronic pain lasts months or even years beyond the expected recovery period.  Staggeringly, it affects millions globally, placing a significant burden on healthcare systems and society.  It can stem from various underlying conditions like musculoskeletal disorders, neuropathies and systemic diseases, making management complex and multifaceted.

While acute and chronic pain differ in duration and mechanisms, they share a common impact on well-being and quality of life.  Both types disrupt daily activities, impair functioning and cause emotional distress if untreated.  They also lead to significant consequences like anxiety, depression, work incapacity and strained social relationships.  Those with chronic pain typically suffer for an average of seven years.

Understanding the complex origins of pain requires a multidisciplinary approach.  As physiotherapists, we collaborate with allied healthcare professionals including orthopaedic surgeons, rheumatologists, podiatrists, general practitioners, chiropractors, psychologists and radiographers to provide tailored care for each patient.

What is the Difference Between Chiropractic, Osteopathy & Physiotherapy?

As far as we can see…, the primary distinction lies solely in… ‘their spelling’. Allow us to elaborate…

These three professions primarily focus on conservative (non-surgical) musculoskeletal care and it seems somewhat redundant to have separate professions essentially performing the same or very similar functions.

If a physiotherapist, osteopath and chiropractor effectively assess and diagnose a patient and ask, “What’s the most effective way to address this patient’s concern?” they should theoretically all adopt the same treatment or management approach.  There’s an optimal treatment method for each patient and each professional should tailor their care to the individual’s needs rather than strictly adhering to professional ideologies.

We often see patients referred to either a chiropractor or an osteopath. At the Pain And Injury Clinic, we work as a team of professionals dedicated to improving patient care.  Consequently, we often co-manage patients across our clinical team. This means patients may also see a podiatrist, chiropractor, osteopath and so on.
